The Dyar Circus Comes to DHS Three Tangerines, One Wheel, No Clown Suit…. Meet Hunter Dyar By Shannon Finkel - 03/08 Young people are often fascinated by those who can juggle, ride a unicycle, or even solve a Rubik’s Cube. DHS freshman Hunter Dyar is one of the lucky few who can do all three. This 14-year old is a professional-level juggler and unicycle rider. And his amazing talents don’t end there; he also knows how to solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than 30 seconds. “It was fascinating to watch his fingers move so quickly,” said DHS English teacher, Mrs. Suzanne MacLehose, of her student’s special talent. “A classmate would mix it up and he’d get it back together immediately.” The Man Behind The Camera “I want papers on my desk,” DHS senior Andrew Kirkman exclaims as he freezes mid-sentence and disappears back into the control room of Blue Wave News, where just minutes ago he was writing his script. Mitch Blummer, a fellow DHS senior and cast member of Blue Wave News since 2005, tugs gently on the green screen that covers the barren cement wall of the Video Productions room. Queens of the Stone Age Queens of the Stone Age is one of the best bands out there. They have been through many personnel changes but have always managed to put out the best albums I’ve ever listened to. My favorite Queens of the Stone Age album is Songs for the Deaf. It is about a road trip through the desert that lead guitarist and singer Josh Homme invented. The true goal of the album was to show exactly how much the radio sucks. Spring Fashion: Are You Dressed For It? I recently was in San Francisco, California, one of the most diverse fashion cities in the country, and passed an enormous billboard with a quote from shoe designer Kenneth Cole stating, "You are on a video camera an average of 10 times a day. Are you dressed for it?" Many of the people of San Francisco are definitely ready: each person on the street has his or her own personal style. Yes, to some fashion is tedious, pretentious and shallow, but to all fashion is a state of expression. Wearing sweatpants embodies the persona that you are carefree that day. We dress to reflect the way we feel. Fashion expresses our own individuality; this individuality sometimes resonates with others and becomes popular, thus, a trend is born. Wu-Tang Clan is without a doubt one of the most influential hip-hop groups ever. The nine original members released their first single in 1993, “Protect Ya Neck”, which quickly made their name known. Wu Tang has been mentioned in several songs by the Notorious B.I.G and, Wyclef Jean, and featured in compilations with rap legends such as Tupac Shakur. The China Exchange’s Excellent Adventure Walking in the China Exchange classroom, I noticed a photograph of a squishy pink blob on the projection screen. “That’s a squid,” Mrs. Lynda Sorensen, a teacher of the China Exchange class, said. “We got to try some in Chinatown.” Mrs. Armiger and Mrs. Shortliffe also co-teach the course with Mrs. Sorenson. Soccer and Spanish Collide: “I was born with a soccer ball on my mind” Senor Juan Arango informed me, smiling. Arango is one of the more recent additions to the DHS Spanish department. Arango has a very interesting past. Growing up in Colombia, he was a soccer fanatic who is a close follower of his favorite team, the national team of Colombia. “I would listen to the team’s games on my radio and would cry when they started to lose,” this ardent fan said. At age 17, he came to the United States to play in the New York City League, Cali, where he was later recruited to play for Southern Connecticut University. |

Spring is just around the corner. The warm weather makes everyone want to pack away the heavy winter clothes and put on something fresh. Neirad Enilno reporter Hannah Litchfield sought out DHS’s own fashion experts for advice on what to buy for the warmer weather. You have seen these students sauntering down the hallways. They turn heads. So, here are their tips for looking styling this spring. Spring is just around the corner, and with the warmer weather comes serious fashion choices. Do the new florals make a person look like a piece of ambulant upholstery? Is the red, white & blue trend hot or does it make a person look like they are just hanging out for July 4th? Stepping Their Way to Worlds
By Meg Murphy- 03/08 Every week, we hear about another sports team or an individual athlete that excels in their event, especially those on DHS sports teams. Very rarely do we hear about those who succeed outside of traditional school sports. Two DHS students are breaking out of the traditional athletic mold. Sophomore Virginia Van Ingen and freshman Catherine Becker have thrived in Irish step dancing. “When a dance teacher decided to open up her own dance school, she asked me and 19 other girls to dance at her school, and I have been there for the past 10 years,” Van Ingen said. Kids In Crisis: Promoting A Safe Haven in Fairfield County
In 1994, UNICEF determined that there were roughly 100 million children living or working on the streets of the world’s cities, largely because of family issues and breakdowns at home. The organization Kids in Crisis is taking the initiative to help these children. The Hidden Heroes The Darien High School girl’s volleyball team is synonymous with sporting success. These high profile athletes win accolade after accolade including the state championships last season. (See “Volleyball Glory Days,” Neirad Enilno, December edition) |
