Part I: DHS Fashionista Secrets

Spring is just around the corner. The warmer weather makes everyone want to pack away the heavy winter clothes and put on something fresh. Neirad Enilno reporter Hannah Litchfield sought out DHS’s own fashion experts for advice on what to buy for the warmer weather. You have seen these students sauntering down the hallways. They turn heads. So, here are their tips for looking styling this spring.

FashionistaName: Mitch Blummer, Senior

Inspiration: My "inspiration" for how I dress stems mostly from the activities that I do and the interests I have. Alot of the stuff I wear, I wear because of its functionality during skateboarding, there is some stuff that I wear only during skateboarding that I don’t usually wear, like a bandanna around my head to hold my hair in place, fitting cotton gloves when it’s cold, etc…

Favorite brands: I do have some favorite brands, different brands for different articles of clothes. My favorite shoe brand is DVS Shoes which are skate shoes originally designed purely for skateboarding. I am currently rocking the HUF 5 model, which is Keith Hufnagle's pro skate shoe model. For pants I almost always wear Dickies in khaki, blue, black or green…I will usually wear either a shirt from a skate company, one with a band's name printed on it somehow, or a shirt from Jason Dill's (pro skater/artist) clothing line.

Shop online? I usually dont shop online unless I am ordering a specific tee shirt from a skateboarding mail order company like Active Mailorder or CCS. Most of my clothes come from buying stuff on impulse at shows I go to or skate shops in the area.

Inspired by any specific person? I wouldnt say I am influenced by one person specifically but instead by a variety of people. From the skateboarding world, I am inspired by Jason Dill, Marc Jhonson, Mark Gonzales and Corey Duffel. I am also inspired by the way some filmmaker’s dress; the ones that stand out are Harmony Korine and David Lynch.

DHS’s best/most uniquely dressed: While I wouldn’t wear the type of clothes he does, I think that Austin Anderson has mad steeze. The stylin’, colorful, oversized t-shirts and baggy pants are pretty dope.

Spring Style File Name: Zoe Reiches, Senior

Inspiration: My inspiration is to figure out how to look okay without spending too much money and trying to avoid wearing brand names because I think they take away from the clothes and label you as a person.

Favorite brands: I like things at Rainbow, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, and thrift stores. I super like shopping in places that won't have recognizable clothes (like in Greenwich Village) so people can take them for what they are, not where they came from.

Shop online? I don't buy things online, but I look at things on ebay, and Amazon, and occasionally really expensive stores.

Inspired by any specific person? There's not one specific person who inspires me, no. Generally I try to not fit in. It's an odd complex I've had forever.

DHS’s best/most uniquely dressed: I think Sarah McKay wears pretty cool clothes, Amanda Fuller, Isabel Castro, Nina Palmer, KimTas, and Elizabeth Leimkuhler…They all wear clothes I can see myself wearing and they all have a unique style.

Spring Style File Name: Helen Robinson, junior

Inspiration: I would have to say that I'm mostly inspired by vintage clothes. My mom saved all her clothes from when she was younger, so I like to mix and match a lot of her vintage tops and sweaters with my own stuff.

Favorite brands: Marc Jacobs, Christiane Celle, Vince, and American Apparel because I’m a big t-shirt person.

Shop online? … If I do I usually go on shopbop.com, net-a-porter.com, or intermixonline.com.

Inspired by any specific person? …It's kind of just a combination of everyone I guess, but I really do like Sienna Miller’s and Agnyess Deyn's style.

DHS’s best/most uniquely dressed: Chloe Drimal…she's never afraid of trying new things and always sticks to her own style.

Spring Style

Name: Philip Winter, senior

Inspiration: My inspiration for how I dress is really myself. I guess my background and interests also have a big influence on my fashion sense as well.

Favorite brands: Brooks Brothers, Polo, Barbour, and Patagonia.

Shop online? I rarely shop online for clothes, it’s tough to get the sizes right.

Inspired by any specific person? I am not inspired by any one person for how I dress.  My style really comes from what I like, often times it comes from different and random people I see.

DHS’s best/most uniquely dressed: Caroline Frelinghuysen. Classy, yet hot.

Spring FashionName: Ally Taylor, senior

Inspiration: I don't think that there is a certain "inspiration" for how I dress. I think the best indicator would be my personality, though. I'm a little bit quirky and I think my clothes fit that pretty well. I'm a sucker for almost anything vintage. I don't, however, wake up in the morning asking how I can define myself through my attire or make myself stand out. I like anything that is comfortable, really. Being tall, my biggest concern is really avoiding ill-fitting clothes- there seems to be a lot out there, though.

Favorite brands: I would like to say that I love fashion designers like Marc Jacobs, but I don't really wear that much of it because of the price. Most of my favorite clothes come from Urban Outfitters, Polo Rugby, Old Navy...I also have a rather large collection of Rock & Republic jeans simply because they are made extra long. I also collect band/concert shirts.

Shop Online? I find it necessary to try clothes on before I buy them, so I rarely shop online. If I am browsing online, however, it is usually because I am searching for the perfect pair of shoes or checking out the latest clothing collection from my favorite store - LF. I do have a guilty pleasure site, however. I love thecobrasnake.com just to see what all the indie scenesters are wearing. I am fascinated by them.

Inspired by any specific person? I love everything involving Gwen Stefani, whether it be her own clothing line, L.A.M.B, or anything she wears on the street. She has this uncanny ability to mix and match punk rock, prep, glam, and classic, all with an effortless look.

DHS’s best/most uniquely dressed: I think that best dressed and most uniquely dressed are two different people at DHS. I believe that Brekke McDowell is the best dressed because she has the best basics, but knows how to mix and match them perfectly. Sarah McKay is my vote for most uniquely dressed because she has the talent to combine the style of England with the style of the U.S. and isn't afraid of wearing anything.BTW - Ally is not only super fashionable, but also sort of good @ volleyball

Part Deux: Hannah Litchfield has selected more of DHS’s fashion leaders. To find out who Hannah picked don’t miss the March issue of Neirad. Stay tuned!
