Spring is just around the corner, and with the warmer weather comes serious fashion choices. Do the new florals make a person look like a piece of ambulant upholstery? Is the red, white & blue trend hot or does it make a person look like they are just hanging out for July 4th?
A perplexed fashionista can now have those questions answered by a personal shopper. In a small town in Northern Massachusetts a woman puts to use her fashion sense and love of shopping. Thirty-five-year old Rae Ann Romero is not afraid to tell people what looks good and what does not. ""As your consultant, you're not wearing this", Romero tells her first client.
Romero recently started a personal shopping business, which she has named "Shop Golightly", inspired by actress Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany's.” Romero has always had a keen sense of style and dreamed of putting her fashion sense to good use, not only for her personal wardrobe, but for the wardrobe of others around her. "I always go shopping for my Mom because I know what looks good on her" says Romero.
With a full time job at Yankee Candle, as well as the position of full time Mom, Romero hasn't heavily promoted her business quite yet. However, she recently met with her first client, a work colleague.
The first step in the Shop Golightly process is a closet consultation. The charge for this service is $200. Romero goes through the closet of her client to get a feel for what their personal style is and what looks good on them. She also takes different articles of clothing and shows her client how to "make it work".
"Even when we were younger she always dressed better than me," says Darien resident Deb Randall. Romero is her little sister. "I was always seeking tips from my baby sister."
The next step is the actual shopping trip, when Romero will either go solo or with the client to various stores in search of what is "right" for whomever she is shopping. The charge for a customized shopping trip consultation is $50 per hour plus the cost of clothes that are purchased. The client can also book a complete consultation package for $500.
Romero follows certain rules such as what she calls the half-hooch rule. This means that each outfit is only allowed one hooch item, such as leopard skin boots or a snake skin skirt. Anymore and Romero says it's just too much. It seems Romero has a good sense that's not just limited to apparel. "I'll do decorating tips as well," Romero explains.
Romero teaches her clients how to make things work and shop in a “Golightly style".
