Current, the DHS literary magazine, is seeking new recruits. This publication collects and publishes student material.
The Current publication is a great way for aspiring writers to display all kinds of work. This year the Current staff is seeking creative non-fiction, short stories, poems, song lyrics, and even artwork.
"I think it is fun. It is nice that we [students] get to express ourselves in a different way!" Current editor Katie Rawden told Neirad Enlino. Rawden believes that there are ideal opportunities for every student to express him or her self. Current is looking for work from frosh on up to the head-honcho seniors.
Current recently sponsored and organized the Poetry Slam, which was a great success. The Friday night event was so successful that students insisted on holding another slam. In addition to poetry, the second slam is expected to include song lyrics, singing, and artwork displays.
More common though, are the Read-Around sessions. This event is a great opportunity to meet new people and share writing samples. Current prefers short fictional excerpts but any writing can be shared in these read-around sessions (which do include yummy snacks!) You sit in a circle (hence the "around" in the name) and listen to others writing, and then share your own.
"It is really important to us that students see Current writing events as supportive positive places where they can share work," Current advisor Mrs. Agnew said. She has been a driving force to spearhead activities such as the Poetry Slam and Read-Around sessions.
There are two main types of meetings. There are writer's meetings every Monday, which consist of people who share their writing and submit it to Current. There are also publication meetings that consist of editing and organizing the layout of the magazine.
"If you do not write there are a lot of other tasks to do," Mrs. Agnew said. These tasks, include editing, correcting, and revising stories, as well as layout and design. Since Current is very flexible with their meeting times, a student can commit to other extra curricular activities, like sports, and still be an active member on the Current staff.
A special new edition of Current is coming out this semester, which will feature poems from the Poetry Slam. In the spring a larger version of the magazine will contain everything from short stories to artwork. This premier publication is celebrated with a release party. Copies of Current will be passed out during the launch festivities. "It is really fun, and you can try new things and not get graded or judged. It’s a great way to meet with creative and interesting people," Mrs. Agnew said.
If you are interested in submitting your work to the Current, email Current@darienps.org, or attend the weekly meetings, which are held every Monday at 2:30pm in the A-206 Learning Connections Room.
