By the time spring rolls around, most students begin hunting for summer jobs to make some extra money and stay busy. . Every summer we hear of Darien High School students lifeguarding at the local beaches or being camp counselors at the country clubs around the area. This year, Neirad has dug a little deeper to discover the more unique jobs that DHS students have secured for the summer of 2011. (For help finding your own summer job visit the DHS Jobs Website)

Kate Ferguson (sophomore): “At Equinox I am working as a sales associate in the shop which is really fun and a good job. I work three to four days a week and sort of learn the inside and out of working in retail and the importance of client relations and such. And once a week I am going into the city to intern at an art gallery. There I will be just doing odd jobs such as filing paper work, working on press releases, organizing and working at openings, and doing the ever important coffee runs! But since I would love to work for a gallery or an auction house when I am older it is great exposure to the art world of New York and a great way to make contacts at a young age which is very important in the art world.”
Abby Leinroth (junior): “I'm working in an internship at Yale Medical School (Discovery to Cure) in a research lab there. I am working in Dr. Qin Yan's lab doing research on epigenetic treatments of cancer. Dr. Yan's most recent publication is ‘Epigenetic Regulation by Lysine Demethylase 5 (KDM5) Enzymes in Cancer.’ I've been doing bibliographic research on epigenetics, and epigenetic treatments of cancer for the past two years in ASR. I can't wait; it should be super exciting!”

Ryan Stracuzzi (junior): “I am going to be a special needs camp counselor at the Darien YMCA. I will work with kids who have special needs to help them enjoy their summer. We play sports, do arts and crafts, and go on field trips occasionally. I’m excited to learn about…and create close relationships [with the kids].”

Alex Bruno (senior):“I work as a parking lot attendant at my mom's office building in Rowayton and usually split the shifts with Jamie Muehring or Evan Rogers. A lot of people think it's parking for Brendan's 101, which is right next door, but it's just for the people who work in the office building so we usually put cones out to block the entrance. There have definitely been some super awkward moments when people try to pull in and we have to turn them away. One mom from Darien actually accused my friend Jamie of ruining the town of Rowayton because we couldn't let her park there. But all in all, it's a super laid back job. You end becoming good friends with a lot of people that work in the office building too.”

Kevin Koenitzer (junior):“This summer I’ll be working at the Red Cross Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The Headquarters is in charge of coordinating aid for various groups of people in need. I’m extremely excited it should be a very interesting experience.”
