Bucket Lists: Last Chance for Greatness
NEIRAD enilno edition
Many of you have probably seen one of the numerous TV shows or movies such as “The Bucket List” and “The Buried Life” that show a person or a group of people who have a “bucket list”; a list of tasks or objectives that somebody must complete before a certain time or before they die. Often these tasks are chosen and are a little ridiculous but other times they are realistic. Whether they are crazy or normal the people do everything they can to complete the tasks.
Darien High School seniors have only one summer before they go to college; one summer to complete the goals that they have been dying to complete before entering the world of college and living without their parents and one summer to check off the boxes that remain unchecked on the bucket lists. While many people are trying to enjoy the time, many Darien High School seniors have created their own bucket list’s that have include things they have wanted to do before they leave for college.
Seniors Lauren Perkins and Lindsay Tyler are two of the people that have made their own bucket list filled with goals and accolades that they have been meaning to complete for a while now. One of the tasks on the lists is to have a human pacman game in the library. Inspired by the YouTube video, the girls want a crowd of people to dress up and move around acting and reacting like the creatures in the arcade game know as pacman. “We watched the YouTube video and were inspired to try something similar in our own school also the loud noises would annoy the librarians to no ends” Perkins said. The next two tasks that are on the list are a little bit strange and different from the others. The girls want to organize a day where everybody in the school wears 13 t-shirts. They also want to organize a day where everybody in the school gets three free ice cream scoops. One of the most recent tasks that was added to the list is to have a steak roast in the math department. “This idea was considered because the math teachers never let you eat” Perkins said. The girls will have their hands full with all their bucket lists tasks and it will be fun to see if any of the tasks get completed.
Alex McGuire has a very large list of tasks but there are three goals that are at the top of the list, which he is most eager to complete. First, he wants to have a techno rave inside the school, preferably the cafeteria because the cafeteria is the only room in the building without lights. McGuire wants the rave “just for kicks” and “wants the whole senior class to do it.” Even though the idea is far-fetched he still has hopes. Second, McGuire wants to dance with Ms. Young at prom. After watching “Dancing With The Teachers” and realizing how talented Ms. Young is, Alex wants her to teach him the dance moves that were used in the show. Finally, Alex wants to go to a music festival over the summer. “I’m really into music and I really want to have a festival experience because it is unlike any other concert experience,” McGuire said. While most DHS seniors will try to enjoy the nice weather, Alex will be completing his bucket list.
Another person that has developed a bucket list over the first eighteen years of his life is senior Chris Yowan. Unlike everybody else who has a bucket list, Chris’ list has only one task which was recently completed. Chris wanted to join the live audience at the Jerry Springer Show filmed in Stamford, Connecticut. This was accomplished in early May but the memories will last forever. “The show was hilarious and I had a great time” Yowan said. Even though Chris doesn’t have a physical list, he is going to slowly remember things that will be accomplished over the summer.
Every senior whether they know it or not has a bucket list. Only the bold, audacious ones complete the list and check the boxes. It will be interesting to see how successful these seniors are in completing their tasks. For Juniors and maybe even Sophomores it is a good time to start thinking about things you want to do, that have been bothering you, before you go to college and before the last years of high school spiral away. It will be helpful because you will have more time and a head start to complete the tasks that you have always wanted to do.
