The Bacon, Egg and Cheese: A Review of the Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich
NEIRAD enilno edition
DHS loves its bacon egg and cheese. This breakfast sandwich gets kids through a tough school day and holds them until lunch time. A hefty BEC can help alleviate that "Oh, I'm hungry and it is only third period" feeling. It also helps get rid a person of the embarrassing stomach growl in the middle of math class.
Around town there are many places to get a delicious bacon egg and cheese sandwich. But which is the best? Neirad Enilno decided to check out the popular breakfast hot spots. We considered elements such as price, overall taste, consistency and speed of delivery.
Hopefully, we can save our loyal readers from wasting nearly $3 on a lousy BEC. It is tough enough getting ready for school – nothing worse than adding a lousy BEC to the start of the day.
Uncle’s Deli, 1041 Post Road, Darien, 203-655-9701
Price: $2.75
Although the bun is toasted, it is not dried out and crunchy. The bacon in this sandwich is not too crunchy that one would think that you are chewing on something other than bacon. Also, there is enough cheese and bacon to go along with the egg.
Pros
Egg, cheese and bacon ratio is solid
Not overly crunchy bacon
Cons
Excessive poppy seeds from the roll take over the taste in the mouth..
Mama Carmela's Italian Deli, 1981 Post Rd, Darien, 203-655-9004
Price: $2.50
Voted Neirad Enilno’s best bacon, egg, and cheese for the price. You can buy a drink and the sandwich for under $5. Obviously, the free drink is a great advantage when the sandwich leaves a diner wanting an early-morning beverage. We admit it is a disappointment the bread is not toasted but the bacon makes up for it. Located on the Post Road on the way between DHS and Weed Beach, Mama’s has become a center for DHS students, and for good reason.
Pro
Egg is cooked to perfection
Poppy seeds don’t take over the sandwich
Bacon is both soft and crunchy
Con
Bread to egg ratio leans too heavily on the bread side
Not enough cheese
“I’m only half way through and I need a drink”
Jake’s Place, 4 Ledge Rd, Darien, 203-655-2305
Price: $2.75
If you’re in or around the Noroton Heights area and don’t feel like spending your life savings on Vavala’s, Jake’s Place is just across the street. Although the wait to pick up your sandwich could be slightly longer than expected, Jake’s still scores high on Neirad Enilno’s top bacon egg and cheese vendors.
Pro
Bacon, egg, cheese bread ratio is the best
Smushes together well
Egg not runny, but still soft
Not messy w/ the egg
Con
Didn’t handle the morning rush well
Bacon is the majority of the taste
Heavy on cheese in some places
Overpopulated with poppy seeds
Darien Doughnut, 364 Heights Road, Darien, 203-656-2805
Price: $3.50
If you’re looking for somewhere to fill your stomach with something that most people wouldn’t believe is food, Darien Doughnut is the place to go. Located next to Glen Liquors and across the street from the train station in Noroton, this may be the place for you. Overpriced food of that quality scores low in the ranks in comparison to the other delis, in Neirad Enilno’s opinion.
Con
WAY too much egg
Overly buttered role
Just because bacon and ham come from the same animal doesn’t mean they should look the same
Cannot taste bacon
Visually unappealing
I could have spent less for better quality at McDonald’s
Bacon is smushy

DHS Café
Price: $3.75
Proximity combined with a strict closed campus rule makes the DHS Caf a very popular destination for hungry high-schoolers.
Pro
Egg, bacon, cheese ratio is good
Con
Very bready: The roll quality is good but because of the excess of bread, it feels as if the BEC content is sparse.
Placement of bacon egg and cheese is poor
Egg is not runny, a bit dried out.
