A week after Darien finished its 1962 football season the Sophomore class presented to the team “The Football”. This dance is traditionally a gift from the Sophomores to the team, and in keeping with tradition the dance was a success.
Headed by their class officers, the underclassmen moved those lucky participants of detention out of their hallowed hall, and prepared the cafeteria for action. Saturday decorations were created. By the time the students began to arrive the last yardline was down. Pictures of the team served to capture the imaginations of all who were there. Over the refreshment booth there was the appropriate title of “Sugar Bowl.” The cheerleaders were interestingly portrayed minus heads.
The music situation was adequately handled by the “Invictas.” This band consisted of two guitars, a sax, and the ever-present set of drums. Their name was taken from an Andover group which apparently inspired a large portion of that night’s musical selections. For entertainment Jeff Nehms, Gene Turner, Doug Rae, and Judy Gegenheimer sang various folk songs. It was definitely entertaining. After this break Dick Seipt, Pete Wilson, and Leach Bros. (Chas and Wilson) played after which dancing resumed.
By eleven-thirty the lucky sophomores were corralled and ready for clean-up. The older left, to continue their evening at other abodes.
The students would like to thank the chaperons, the sophomores and all those who helped make this dance a pleasant one.
