One day, $25 dollars, three meals? Well you could consider going to Uncle’s Deli, Backstreet Restaurant both in Darien and Post Road Diner in Norwalk. This reporter decided to venture to find out how one would survive one day on $25 dollars, and strangely it worked out great!

For breakfast how about trying Darien High School’s favorite breakfast sandwich, the bacon egg and cheese. But opt for one with a lot more quality and a buck cheaper! The bacon is crispy and delicious and unburned. The bread roll fresh and soft, and the sandwich just plain delicious.

It beats the famous Darien High School B.E.C. in not only taste but cost. The Uncle’s BEC is $2.75 and the DHS cafeteria charges $3.75 for its substandard fare. Diners get a substantially better sandwich at Uncle’s Deli, but if you wish to eat there hope for a sunny day because all the seating is outside on picnic tables lining Post Road in the center of downtown Darien.

Why not have a real American lunch at one of the most undiscovered places in Darien: Backstreet Restaurant located at 22 Center Street. The food is great and definitely underpriced. I had the quintessential American cheeseburger, very big, with lots of cheese, lettuce and tomato. With the choice of well done, medium or rare, I would go with rare or medium-rare myself, but if you are afraid of food poisoning then you can go with the well done. Fries are included. If you do take this advice, make sure you come hungry because this beast is sure to fill you up. For $10.50 you can get the experience of authentic American cuisine and taste what you should when you eat a cheeseburger.

There were several possibilities for dinner, but none more appealing than the quintessential dining experience of eating at an authentic 24-hour American roadside diner. Post Road Diner offers generous portions, reasonable prices, and the attention to the customers is marvelous: the waiters and waitresses seem like they genuinely want to make you happy. A calzone for $7.25 with a Coke for $1.35 was more than enough to fill me up. Expecting the calzone to be a tiny thing I was greatly surprised and very happy when it came to the table. It was quite the opposite. For that price I expected a far smaller portion, but was pleasantly surprised when a sea of melted cheese wrapped around warm wonderfully prepared bread arrived. It was surprisingly inexpensive. It was one of the best dinners in a while. Post Road provides the true experience of a 1950s diner with a little Italian twist.

So as seen it is possible to eat three meals out in one day in Darien and its surroundings for $25. Sum total for 24 hours of eating: $21.85. (not including tax & tip) Uncle’s for breakfast, Backstreet for lunch; and Post Road Diner for dinner; a great combination that a diner can’t go wrong.
