Changing the world one pair at a time is what two students at DHS have committed themselves to doing. Sophomores Katie Critelli and Alex Iqbal have become involved in the charitable organization Soles4Souls.
This worldwide organization dedicates its purpose to collecting new and used shoes that are then distributed to areas of need. The shoes donated help protect the feet of poverty stricken citizens from scrapes, cuts, contaminants that lead to potentially serious healthcare issues.
Soles4Souls has coordinated relief efforts in disasters such as the Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina and Rita, netting over 1 million shoes.
The girls first got involved when Katie’s mom suggested they take part in the organization. “We decided it would be a great type of fundraiser for schools, and I called Alex, who was very helpful and enthusiastic,” said Critelli. “When Katie asked if I would take part in the organization I thought it was a great idea,” said Iqbal. “Neither of us have worked with Soles4Souls before, but we’re planning on collecting shoes for 5 weeks,” said Critelli. But how can a single pair of shoes make a difference you may ask?
“This organization is a rewarding type of charity project because it forces one to look in their closet and see that you’re lucky and have a lot of possessions that you don’t necessarily need or use. This is an opportunity to give shoes away to those who don’t have as much,” smiled Critelli. “I feel like a better person, knowing that I’m helping out people in need and making a difference in the world,” said Iqbal.
From April 13th to May 15th DHS will be collecting gently worn footwear to help support this great charity. Soles4Souls accepts all types of shoes, athletic, running, dress, sandals, pumps, heels, work boots, cleats, dance, flip flops, just as long as they are new or gently worn. And for those of you who are half sole-less, Soles4Souls also excepts single shoes, and attempts to match them up. So what can DHS students do to help out?
“DHS students can help out by donating worn shoes in the boxes that will be provided in the main entrance of the high school and the entrance near the library. In addition, boxes will be set up at the Darien Library and the Darien Sports Shop. Bake sales every Tuesday and Wednesday will also be held over the duration of the shoe drive. The money collected will be used to help ship the shoes over seas,”said Iqbal. “The sophomore class is encouraged to take large participation in this act of kindness because it is our fundraiser for the year,” said Critelli. For those overseas they will be able to walk in your shoes and you will recognize how fortunate we are.
