Neirad talked to gymnastics captains, Kaylyn Van Sciver and Grace Ann Sweeney, to hear about the upcoming winter season.
What are your biggest goals for the upcoming season?
Kaylyn: Our biggest goals are to win FCIACs and States, again. We also want to qualify to go to New Englands as a team.
Grace Ann: I hope to have an undefeated season, and make it to New Englands as a team.
What do you believe will be your biggest challenges?
K: As a whole, to go undefeated this year. For specific team talents, we need to work on being clean and tight with our routines so we don’t get deductions on being sloppy.
GA: Our weakest events tend to be bars and beam, so we need to work on those.
How are your new freshmen?
K: Our three new freshmen are all arounders (meaning they compete in all four events). This is good because if someone can’t go to one event or gets hurt, the team won’t drastically be affected.
GA: All of our freshmen have done gymnastics before so they will be competing and helping out the team a lot.
How many girls are on the team? How many of those compete?
K: We have 11 girls, all of which who will compete at least one meet. We have six girls who do all around.
GA: There are seven seniors, one sophomore, and three freshmen.
Do you expect a lot of girls to qualify for FCIACs and States?
K: All of the teams in FCIACs automatically qualify, and we will probably have about five of us place on events there. As for States, they take the top 10 teams per class, and we usually qualify for that.
GA: Individuals qualify for State Opens based on an average of their top five scores on each event. I do expect a lot of girls will qualify for that.
Did you lose a lot of senior talent last year?
K: We lost Meg Gildea last year, who was the captain and our best senior. She was an all arounder and a very strong competitor, but we made up for it this year by gaining three new all arounders.
GA: All of the seniors last year added to the team, but we have a lot of new talent that should make up for it.
Do any of the seniors plan on doing gymnastics in college?
GA: There are no seniors planning on doing gymnastics in college.
