An Emergency Ride

It’s a common misconception of ambulances and police cars that speed is the most important factor.  What may not be so surprising though is the fact that safety is the biggest concern amongst the Posties.  What’s even more surprising is that you won’t see many ambulances whizzing through red lights.

“We have to stop at all red lights; we must follow all traffic laws”.  Post 53 President Dan Connell Said.

The Ford E-Series is a favorite amongst newscasters, ambulance drivers, and mailmen. To have the honor of driving this life saving machine, one must go through four months and complete six grueling tests.

“Every kid wants to drive, but you gotta make sure you can do it without mirrors,” Connell said.
Although the thrill of a large toy with flashing lights may not seem so fun once you’re behind the wheel.  With the max speed at 70 mph on the highway for optimal control and 40 mph in town, NASCAR fans might be let down.

Another surprising fact is that the ambulance is not a custom job. It is simply built with the body of a normal Ford E-series truck, with the chassis refitted.

Driving safe off the job is also important.  With the strict policy of one speeding ticket and you’re off driving duty, “One large speeding ticket, no ambulance”.

The upkeep on this machine may be a little more than your mom’s minivan:  With a full team of freshmen designated to scrubbing it down every Saturday. It also goes for a full maintenance in Milford each year.

Sky rocketing gas costs makes not only pedestrians nervous but also our servicemen.  With three four ton vehicles at Post 53’s disposal, it’s hard to imagine the money spent on gas for the entire fleet.

“Gas prices have made a huge impact on funds, but of course it can’t really affect the amount of calls we go on,” Connell said.

Post 53 takes pride in zero accidents over the entire course of their organizations, so there’s no need to worry if you’re ever caught in the back.

Darienites can always count on Post 53 to answer the call, safe and secure in one of its three ambulances.
