For returning DHS students, the first morning of school brought an unexpected surprise. As the ritual showing of Blue Wave News began on the projector screens, the usual and predictable voice was not what struck their ears. The voice was definitely different because the person from which it came was not Andrew Kirkman, the anchorman who many had come to associate the show. Instead, the unfamiliar face on the screen belonged to senior Dean Coots. Many students did not know how to respond to this sudden change in a part of school life that was somewhat taken for granted. After all,
Kirkman was not only the anchor but also one of the founders of Blue Wave News, which began in the fall of 2005. Now, the main question: who is this new guy?
What we all know is that Dean Coots is student who obviously has a passion for video production. But, what some might not know is that Dean was the only one who had the amount of dedication and determination needed to take on the multi-faceted job of being Blue Wave News anchor. At the end of the 2008 school year, Mr. Ivan Crowther, faculty supervisor of the show and video productions teacher, decided to create a contest. Questionnaires were filled out by potential anchor candidates, and after some difficulty the search was finally narrowed down. Dean was the one to meet the stringent criteria for the job.
“A lot more is involved in being anchor than just those connected moments,” Mr. Crowther said. It turns out that being a good anchor doesn’t just involve being able to read the news. Coordinating work and putting together all the stories from each part of the news team are equally important. As you can probably guess, commitment to this job is a key factor. “We needed someone who had the time and the energy to do all these jobs,” Mr. Crowther explained.
Well, with his broad knowledge on video production, leadership qualities, and dedication to the show, Dean seems to promote a positive future for Blue Wave News. All we have to do is get used to the fresh face, and watch the show transform and fill the expectations Andrew Kirkman created for the student audience.
