Junior Sam Stevenson is a standout on in the world of DHS competitive sports. She has only been playing volleyball for three years, as well as lacrosse for five years, yet she excels remarkably in both sports, playing varsity seats in both girls lacrosse and volleyball. Sam informs me it is not just about athletic skill: many life lessons are learned in both sports. "We always have to depend on each other in order to succeed," Sam said.

During Sam's freshman year she was chosen to play varsity volleyball, which is a huge accomplishment considering she came into Darien High School with no experience playing volleyball.  Sam became interested because her older sister, Alex, was on the team, as well as knowing that girl's volleyball is one of DHS's best, and most competitive sports programs.

Sam's proudest moments in volleyball have been during states and FCIAC's every year. Especially during her sophomore year, when the team won by a close one point with the score of 3-2, Sam remarks it as being, "one of the most emotional times during volleyball but we all came through as a team."

Sam's is known as a vital athlete to the volleyball team, fellow teammate, junior Emily Cordner remarks, "Sam's a great sport, her drive to win is huge, but she doesn't lose her composure and remains calm even in pressure situations. She's a great leader on the court too; she's always just as concerned about her teammates and their performances as she is her own."

Sam's presence and strong athletic ability also graces the lacrosse fields every spring on Darien girls varsity lax. Sam began to play lacrosse when she was in 7 th grade, because according to Sam, lacrosse was, "something new."

This year Sam has been mentioned for her amazing lacrosse tactics in Stamford, Greenwich, and Darien newspapers. Fellow teammate junior Phoebe Maglathin, who plays both volleyball and lacrosse with Sam says, “in lacrosse Sam came out strong this year and is one of our leading scorers." Maglathin, agrees with Cordner’s remarks, "In both of the sports that I play with Sam, she definitely portrays exemplary sportsmanship-she's competitive, aggressive, and a leader to many team mates."

Sam likes both sports equally, but hopes to get recruited and continue playing lacrosse in college. Some of her top picks include Richmond University, University of Virginia, Duke,  Florida State,  Oregon and  University of  Maryland.

Sam is constantly improving her lacrosse and volleyball skills by training for both sports during the off seasons. She does Bluestreak training for volleyball and lacrosse, as well as the summer lacrosse team Connecticut Chargers. In past years she has also done club volleyball teams.

Her leadership, confidence and composure during volleyball and lacrosse are sure to lead both teams to a promising future!
