Many seniors opted not to shell out big bucks to attend the recent prom at the Greenwich Hyatt Regency. They decided to peace out on the proma that often surrounds the biggest formal dance of the school year.
“Prom is so overrated. I think it’s something that you should definitely go to once, but after that, it’s always just another let down. A couple friends and I went to a comedy club in the city instead. It was so fun.” senior Hannah Litchfield said.
There were 438 students that went to prom on May 16. The grade breakdown for the attendees was two freshman, 31 sophomores, 202 juniors, and 144 seniors. Last year, 503 students attended prom.
Non-promgoing seniors planned trips to the city, dinner parties while others snagged tickets for the Kanye West concert and some even landed a coveted spot to the last subway series to take place in Yankee stadium before the wrecking ball strikes. Sadly, rain forced the cancellation of the Mets/Yanks match up.
“It sucked that the game was cancelled. We dragged ourselves all the way to the city, and then found out after an hour of waiting in the stadium, that the game was cancelled. We still had a lot of fun though,” senior Maggie Klein said.
But the majority of the students that did not attend prom headed off to Hartford for Kanye’s Glow in The Dark Tour. The tour also featured Rihanna, N.E.R.D., and Lupe Fiasco. The tickets ranged from $30.00-$90.00. Kanye tickets were on par with cost of DHS prom tickets which cost $75 per person.
“The Kanye concert was amazing. I was with all of my friends, and saw plenty of other people I knew from different schools,” senior Tara Stone said.
And just because many seniors opted to forego prom, it didn’t hurt the overall success of the event, according to Principal Dan Haron.
“Our very first prom involving the breathalyzer not only went about without incident but was one of the nicest and most enjoyable proms that I have been to since my decade-long tenure at DHS,” Mr Haron said. “My hope is that this event will begin to change the students’ mindset and make them realize that indeed it is possible to have a great time without the mind-altering effects of drugs and alcohol. Friday’s prom was a great step in the right direction,” Mr Haron said.
