For Jamie Buchanan make a wish is not just something that she does when she sees a shooting star or finds an eyelash. Making a wish has taken on a whole other component for this DHS sophomore.

Jamie was diagnosed with cancer last year, and her friends and family were there every step of the way. So was the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The organization dedicated to granting a wish to a child with a life-threatening medical condition fulfilled Jamie’s wish to attend the Grammy Awards.

“I’ve always wanted to go, and also I thought it’d be fun for my family, Remy, and I after the year I had,” Jamie said.

Jamie was the last person to be selfish through any of this Hollywood hoopla. She asked if her family and best friend, sophomore Remy Peace, could also join the fun. The Make-a-Wish Foundation agreed to let the whole family and Remy attend the premier music awards event. The organization also footed the car, airfare and hotel bill.

“It was amazing. It was a really fun trip which was just what Jamie needed after what happened in the past year, Remy said.

Some celebrities that Jamie met include Carrie Underwood, Akon, Fantasia from “American Idol,” and many more that were at the show. Her experience was one she will never forget.

“In California we went to the famous tattoo parlor where “L.A. Ink” is filmed, Universal Studios, and the two restaurants that Ashton Kutcher owns in LA,” Jamie said.

Jamie is now in remission. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to give back to help others. Over Jamie’s tough year something called Jamie’s Journey was started and it was a way to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.

“With the t-shirts and bracelets Jamie designed herself and I helped out by selling the t-shirts and bracelets and helping raise awareness whenever they were going to be selling the items,” Remy said.

Jamie says now when she looks back she knows the inner strength she drew on was only one thing that helped her make through. She realized she could not have done it alone.

“My family and Remy helped through this whole process before, during, and after I was sick,” Jamie said.
