Welcome to Darien Public Schools

The Darien Public Schools web site will be going through many great improvements. Our ultimate goal for the site is to keep parents informed of the events that shape their children's education. It will become an information resource, arranged for quick and easy access.

Any comments about the web site or future enhancements you would like to see added to the site should be directed via email to the webmaster.

Grades 7-12 Survey Has Been Completed

Untitled Document

Recently, the Darien Public Schools collaborated with the Darien Coalition to Address At-Risk Behaviors (DCAARB) to administer a survey that seeks to collect data about adolescent experiences of Darien Youth in grades 7-12, including many positive experiences.  The surveying was done in two parts (a) The Survey of Student Resources and Assets and (b) Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs: ATOD.  The surveying was done anonymously with over 99% of students participating, who were in attendance on that day.  The surveys are sent out for analysis and results are expected back in two-to-three months.  Results will be shared with the community beginning with the Board of Education.  Clicking on “a” or “b”, above, will take you to the complete survey questions.

DHS Stadium Lights Proposal

The Darien Planning and Zoning Commission approved a special permit for this project which permitted eight evening football practices within a two-plus week period in late November to early December.   As part of the P&Z Resolution approving this project, the Board of Education made a commitment to conducting a review of the experience by soliciting input from a variety of parties.  Input is being solicited in two ways.  First, as the Board structures the review, interested parties are invited to submit views about the specific areas that the Board of Education should be investigating relative to the impact of this project.  Please email or postal mail your views by December 16, 2008 to Superintendent of Schools, Don Fiftal, at dfiftal@darienps.org  or to P.O. Box 1167, Darien, CT 06820.  Second, opinions, positive or negative, about the implementation of this project may be submitted during the week of January 5-9, 2009, using these options:

  1. Attend a meeting hosted by the Board of Ed. on January 6th (snow date 7th)
scheduled for 7:30 pm at DHS in the Auxiliary Cafeteria, located across the
hall from the school’s Library-Media Center.

  2. Send an email or postal mail to the Superintendent at the address listed above.

We are requesting this feedback by no later than January 9th, so that the Board has enough time to prepare and discuss our report to meet the P&Z timetable.

National Award For Middlesex Middle School

The United States Department of Education has notified us that Middlesex Middle School has been selected as a Blue Ribbon School for 2008. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program is part of the No Child Left Behind legislation and it honors both public and private schools. Middlesex Middle School is being recognized in the category of being a school that is academically superior in the State of Connecticut. As more information becomes available, we will be sharing it with the community. Although the award is a reflection of the quality of the school district at large, highest congratulations go to the students, staff, and parents of our wonderful middle school!

C . A . R . EDarien is a community wide initiative for which our Darien Public Schools and Board of Education are sponsors.  The aim of CARE Darien is to foster a Community of Accountability and Respect for Everyone.  We encourage all who live, work, and play in our community to be accountable for personal actions and to be respectful of one another, so that kindness prevails over selfishness.  In the Darien Public Schools, we actively support these aims through our elementary schools’ character building program, our middle school’s anti-bullying program, and our high school’s new commitment policy for athletics and activity participation.  You can learn more about the CARE Darien campaign by visiting the website (hosted by the Darien Library) care.darien.org
